@wtgowers Thanks for the thoughtful (as always) analysis! I enjoyed reading it, but I do start to question whether making such statements is a productive way to invest time. It just seems obvious that there will always be reasonable people who do not fully agree with any particul

@wtgowers Respectfully, you are trying to be cool, but the reality is, it that situation: if you are not signing the declaration of THE fields medalists, you are AGAINST it and are very much PRO the profanation AI companies are doing in math. It is a war, and you have to pick a s

@wtgowers My major problem with their letter is the false statement that AI just produce true/false with no insights.
It is very easy, and I did it myself, to prompt the AI to extract useful insights, constructs, and objects from a new proof they provide.

I've written a blog post responding to the letter about maths and AI signed by 25 Fields medallists. As with the Leiden Declaration, I didn't sign it, but I agree with much of it and welcome its existence.

I'm used to politicians being innumerate, but I had hoped that Count Binface was different. Sad to see that he's just the same as all the others. https://t.co/lsfbf2ZMaL

@wtgowers Good post! Let me propose another possible way to understand LLMs’ relative advantage: I think the problems they are solving are ones where meaningful “partial progress” is relatively unlikely. Such problems are more expensive for humans to attempt…

I've just written a blog post in which I discuss the question of whether current LLMs are better at some kinds of mathematics than others, with an emphasis on "current", given how quickly the situation is developing. Link in next tweet.

@wtgowers I was also taken aback by the Leiden Declaration embracing a copyright maximalist position (that training models on copyrighted content without a license amounts to copyright violation) which has been rejected by several courts as well as by many independent legal exper

I went to the (great) workshop in Leiden that led to the Leiden Declaration, but ended up not signing it, as it didn't really represent my views, though it wasn't too different either, so the decision wasn't an obvious one. I've explained more in a blog post. Link in next tweet.

Leonardo Franchi, Fredy Yip and I recently solved a problem of Ben Green by showing that if A is an open product-free subset of the open interval (0,1), then A has measure less than 1/3, a bound that it is not too hard to prove is sharp. 🧵
