@maxwelltani Original reporting that is interesting, funny, and different. Actually getting out of the office and reporting on something that is not driven by campaigns or PR is a new approach that might just work.

@maxwelltani The Globe now has to do an in depth feature on the non-Muslim lesbian who wears a “secular hijab” (one of the peripheral characters in this saga): this is exactly the kind of journalism beyond the scope of small time local news.

Per a note to Boston Globe staff today, the lesbian bar story generated 1,000 subscriptions to the paper yesterday. The Globe’s managing editor said it was “by far our best performing story of the year,” and appears to be “on pace to shatter all sorts of Globe records.”

@maxwelltani journalists need to start learning about coordinated influence networks if they're going to report on them. those 'views' are recirculations within a coordinated network to juice numbers for funders. They are neither real, nor organic, nor equivalent to WaPo, NYTime

I traced the network to a 20-something YouTube growth hacker/bodybuilder running a business called Virelox. In a series of tweets, the founder said he used AI to spin up "ghost creator" accounts on behalf of brands, aiming to go viral on YouTube by gaming the algorithm. https://t

Two people who racked up millions of views as part of the network were actors for hire on Fiverr. The host of the most popular channels, William Reports, was previously a spokesperson for joint cream, and described the YouTube videos he made as "ads." https://t.co/W1eLnyceNt

The network of nearly a dozen channels recycled the same content and followed the exact same formula, repeating phrases, themes, music, and anecdotes (the "ghost creators" repeatedly fixated on the birth of John Catsimatidis and how his businesses were suffering bc of Zohran) htt

I wrote about a guy running a network of secret "ghost creators," paying actors $26 per video to read AI-assisted "anti-Dem" videos on YouTube.
In just a few months, the channels got 45 million views, more than media companies like WaPo, the New Yorker, and, sadly, Semafor. http

Last week, the FT updated an editorial from a Harvard professor to note that he had used AI to "condense" a longer draft of his column.
Now, the billionaire author of a widely-read WSJ op-ed admitted that he used AI to write his piece in yesterday's paper.
