Interestingly all of it started with Texas Instruments setting up an R&D center in Bangalore in 1985, the same place where the C2i team came from.
The opportunity in the AI wave is fuelling the ambition of many more semiconductor engineers in India.

India is unique in having the talent density needed for such attempts. With ~20% of global chip design talent, it enables companies like @C2iSemi and @AgraniLabs to build almost their entire engineering teams in India, both 50-60 member strong now.

Because power delivery doesn't require a 3nm node (28/32 nm is fine), the capital requirements for such a semiconductor startup are much lower. C2i raised ~$20M in its lifetime. Many other semiconductor startups can get their products to market for comparable amounts.

C2i was started by Ram, Preetam, Vikram and Dattatreya - 4 engineers with an average of 20 yrs of experience at Texas Instruments. They are 'industry insiders' who foresaw how existing solutions will fail at power delivery in the AI wave and came up with an alternate approach.

This is what @C2iSemi does. This involves two halves - a multiphase controller (which C2i calls Manas) and a Voltage regulator (which C2i calls Sarayu). C2i's innovation is having them be co-designed and software controlled which allows for far high control loop speed.

Why does that matter? When regulators can't react fast enough, the industry injects filler work into the idle gaps inside real training jobs purely to stop the load collapsing. Estimates measures the cost of such idle compute at ~10% of total energy. C2i minimizes this wastage.

The physics starts to become hard. Electricity moves efficiently at high voltage and low current. Chips need the opposite. So it's stepped down repeatedly on the way in. Most attention goes to the early steps - the move to 800V DC distribution, helpful but the easier half.

The hard half is the last few cms. At the die, voltage drops below 1V while current climbs into the thousands of amps - a 1.2kW part at 0.8V is pulling 1500A with load steps in nanoseconds. Imagine turning 1500A on and off at nanosec frequency. It's incredible engineering.

Power per NVIDIA GPU has gone up meaningfully in every generation:
Volta (2017) 300W -> Ampere (2020) 400W -> Hopper (2022) 700W -> Blackwell (2024) ~1kW -> Blackwell Ultra (2025) -> 1.4kW-> Rubin (2026) -> 1.8–2.3kW Rubin Ultra (2027) ~3.6kW
Twelve-fold in a decade, per GPU.

At the rack level, this compounds further. A typical rack ran 6-8kW in 2017. A Blackwell NVL72 is planned at ~120kW today. NVIDIA's Kyber design is 600kW. Megawatt racks land before 2030. 1MW racks imply one cabinet drawing as much power as ~800 homes. Dennard scaling broke.

Finally, power. Monolithic Power Systems ($65B), Renesas ($40B) and Infineon ($80B) are the leading players here. This sector is now repricing violently. Here's why.

Then is optical interconnect. Frontier models run across thousands of chips that need connectivity. Copper runs out of reach hence the move to optical. This stack includes Arista ($ 200B+), Lumentum ($75B), Coherent ($50B), Astera Labs ($50B), Credo ($40B) - $500B mkt cap.

As the bottleneck moved south, optical interconnect has also seen a significant increase in market cap.
We are yet to come across a strong attempt either in the memory or in the optical interconnect layer from India. If you are a founder building in these, please do reach out.

Next is memory. Micron ($1T), SK Hynix ($900B) and Samsung ($1T+) are the three players in this space. This layer is $ 3-4T of market cap today. As the demand for compute scaled, memory became a bottleneck this year. Prices of HBM, DRAM and NAND are up multiple times.

Include some of the value for Broadcom, Marvell etc. in this and this stack represents ~$10T of market cap today. This is the most lucrative part of the AI hardware stack but also the most complex and capital intensive. @AgraniLabs is a very strong attempt from India here.

Let's start by following the money. The most valuable and watched part of the AI hardware stack is compute. NVIDIA ($5T), AMD ($800B) and Intel ($500B) are the leaders; new entrants include Groq, Cerebras, Etched, Cambricorn (China), Moore Threads (China) and @AgraniLabs (India)

Received several pings today from the ecosystem to understand this better and what it means for Indian semiconductor startups. Here is a simplistic thread on the AI hardware stack, @C2iSemi and India's role within it.

The Cerebras IPO is a watershed moment for the semiconductor industry. At $60B market cap, it’s amongst the biggest outcomes in entrepreneurship/ venture capital.
For much of the last two decades, venture capital focussed on the application layer. Semis, which used to be the

@dvbydt @_groww @lkeshre Incredible journey @dvbydt. Going from a Koramangala office with 6 people to a $13B listed company in 7 years is one of the most impressive Indian fintech stories of the decade. Groww went from zero to 10M+ users in under 5 years - faster than any Indian
