One of the challenges with analysing UK tax data is that these high profile HNW departures don’t yet show up in the data. Indeed tax revenue is currently growing at almost twice the rate of NGDP so most of what we are seeing remains anecdotal. But next February could be quite 28.5K views · 171 likes · 28 reposts · 17 replies Open on X →
Three reflections on John Healey’s speech. Firstly, the good aspects were the tone (upbeat), the repeated focus on pace (addressing the oft-hidden cost of time), and quite a significant section on reducing the regulatory burden on business (judicial review, reducing consultation 35.3K views · 61 likes · 18 reposts · 12 replies Open on X →
I do like the repeated use of "pace" in Healey's growth speech. It does suggest that the (often invisible) cost of time is being taken seriously in HMT. 5K views · 41 likes · 1 reposts · 8 replies Open on X →

This morning the 20-year Gilt - one of the market-derived assumptions used for the OBR forecast - is 70bp above where it was assumed to going to be at the Spring Forecast, at 5.8%. Applied across the curve that is a £6bn increase in debt interest by 2029/30 - or put another way,

Having split my career 50:50 between the public and private sectors I don’t think such data, whilst really striking, are key indicators of ministerial capability. What is unedifying however is X being filled with govt Ministers having a pop at @griffitha for his role in the 96.3K views · 271 likes · 42 reposts · 23 replies Open on X →
