I think the way to understand this is as follows: To people who like Trump, he's not on the ballot. But to people who hate Trump, he very much *is* on the ballot. Skeptical that Trump campaigning/running ads can dislodge that dynamic. After all, he's already omnipresent in media.

Wow. New CNN poll finds 64% in Michigan say Trump's tariffs on Canada are bad for the state. Supports the argument here that Trump's trade war with Canada is backfiring big time on GOP:

When job approval is low, there is an instinct to run and hide. But DJT juices Dem enthusiasm by the mere fact of waking up in the White House; ownership is baked into the -R next to your name. If you're on the ballot you have to recognize that and seek to capture the upside.

AI agents are escaping testing environments. A researcher quit Anthropic over fears of unregulated AI.
Why has Congress refused to act? A $140 million super PAC trying to silence the debate over AI regulation.

Perfect: Trump just threatened to punish Canada by banning Canadian company Bombardier's aerospace sales in US.
But Bombardier's US headquarters is in Kansas, forcing GOP Sen Roger Marshall to distance and giving Dems new hope in a red state.

Also, on this point about the GOP advancing the idea that releasing migrants into the interior is itself a high crime against the country, see this good @MattGertz timeline of how "invasion" language went mainstream in the party:

A strange thing about MAGA populists: They keep saying their "pro-worker" agenda appeals to nonwhite working class people. But then they say migration is a dastardly plot to create Dem voters. By your own lights, wouldn't these people vote GOP?

As @mattyglesias and others rightly noted, the GOP wants border chaos. I think the GOP walking away from the border deal reveals another truth about many Rs: They simply don't want the immigration system to work if "work" means letting more migrants in:

I wonder if the GOP turning on the good border deal will make pundits like @DLeonhardt accept that the true obstacle to bipartisan action is the extremism of the right.
There are fair compromises out there (I offer one here). MAGA won't accept them.

What Republicans object to isn't border chaos. It's more migrants coming here successfully and efficiently. What they don't want is an immigration system that *works.*
Their hatred of Biden's parole programs proves the point. Some thoughts on this here:

Mitch McConnell's surrender on the border raises a question: What exactly are Republicans rejecting as insufficient in terms of "border security"?
A lot! I have new details from the talks for you here. It's crazy that conservatives would reject this:

@GregTSargent Republicans want a "better deal" that would include deportations and concentration camps.

More news on the GOP killing the border deal: This comes as negotiators are discussing a whole new process for expelling asylum seekers and spending way more than the $14 billion Biden wanted, sources say.
This sn't good enough for MAGA. Insane.
