@RushDoshi The threats you are describing are much more likely to occur to Chinese students studying in the US.

@RushDoshi Very good to have your take on this, as a Fulbright China alum.
I have always wanted to ask, why wasn’t the Fulbright program for China restarted during the Biden administration? I had heard from Da Wei that we were close, but it never happened.

@RushDoshi Rush, I would add that one of the main problems with studying in China is the difficulty it creates in obtaining clearances. In my teaching and advising, this is one of the top reasons students give for avoiding extended time in China.

I’m usually not attacked for being naive on China. But I believe strongly in sending students, with appropriate protections, to China. I was one of these students.
I cannot see why our piece should be controversial, but realize there are some who believe all exchanges should be

This new @CFR_org "Expert Take" on student exchanges with China is so flawed I had to read it twice to find something nice to say.
Here goes: At least the authors acknowledge that American students who travel to China need protection, and that the CCP should immediately release

@RushDoshi sacrificing national security and soldier safety for a summit photo op is a total failure of leadership appeasing adversaries who provide target data on our troops is pure weakness

@RushDoshi No, it's a realistic assessment of the situation. Chinese satellite photos are not pinpointing US forces. The base location of US forces is well known to everyone--not a secret. Those saying this have no idea how limited the Chinese assistance actually is.

This feels like a milestone moment in Trump China policy.
There are credible reports that China’s provision of satellite imagery to Iran may have resulted in American fatalities. The President isn’t even denying those reports. But he is brushing them off to keep the summit on

President Trump reluctant to criticize to China
Reporter: We recently reported that Chinese entities may have provided Iranians with satellite imagery of the air bases in Jordan.
Trump: They basically do what we do.

Appreciate @abrownepek discussing the need for “allied scale.” I’ve been in Tokyo the last few days. Lots of agreement here that this is the best (and perhaps only) path to techno-industrial resilience.
Some say the alliances are too wounded for this to happen. We think there is

.@abrownepek: “In shipbuilding…China has more than 200 times US capacity. But the US and key allies and partners, operating together, would tower over China, commanding one and a half times Beijing’s share of…manufacturing…Trump is reversing that logic”

It is not an “exclusionary economic bloc” to give better trade terms to allies than to China in some sectors. Plenty of high-value trade will continue with China in that model — but others will also have a shot. And indeed, there is even an inclusive option for China in this http

The proposal may seem impractical. But if we made real progress on it, the consequences would be dire.
Retaliation and sabotage would be China’s perfectly predictable response to the US building an economic bloc excluding it from high-value markets.
An escalatory cycle would

Appreciate @Brad_Setser persuasively making the case on the need for “allied scale,” too. https://t.co/aVN5MxUxvg

Thrilled that Ezra Klein brought on Brad Setser. Hard to think of a person better positioned to discuss the Second China Shock, its causes, and its consequences -- including for American workers.

@RushDoshi You mean the CEO of the company President Trump featured in his various addresses today?
I’m surprised they let you teach at Georgetown.
On second thought, I’m not.

I can’t say I’m totally surprised.
I wrote about the risk that President Trump might seek to do deals with China - even those that trade away American interests - in the New York Times last October.

Who's banning, tariffing, sanctioning, blacklisting, & even banning companies from "allied" countries from selling?

I've watched @amanpour on TV for decades. So I was grateful for the opportunity to sit down with her for 15 minutes.
Our interview aired on @CNN this weekend.
We talked China policy, Trump's approach, and why this decade is the decisive decade in the competition. https://t.co/I

In today's @nytopinion, I argue that there is a bipartisan consensus on China but that Trump is outside it.
If he returns, he will again undermine it by putting self-interest first.
That could cost the US the decisive decade in the competition.
