9. Do it how you want:
You might only get 1 chance to be a Head Football Coach. Do what you think is best. At the end of the day, all decisions made in the program will fall on you. Find 2 or 3 outside people who you trust to bounce tough decisions off of.

7. You are either coaching it to happen, or allowing it to happen:
Hold your assistant coaches accountable for their players actions on and off the field. What the position group does, is a direct reflection of what the position coach is leading them to do.

8. Be prepared to coach very little football:
Being a Head Coach involves less coaching football than you would ever think. You will spend most of your day being an administrator, tutor, financial advisor, travel agent, counselor, father figure, and life coach.

6. Do not move your standard:
One of the first things you will need to do is identify your "standard". What are you going to accept? Who do you want to be? Whatever those answers are, stick with them through the good and the bad.

4. The amount of hours in the office does not translate to wins:
Have a plan for you and your staff every day. Be efficient with everyone's time. Everyone needs time to be with family and recharge both in season and in the off season.

5. It is okay to turn away a good player who is not a good culture fit:
This is hard for any program. Turning away good players can be difficult, but it may be necessary to maintain a great locker room culture.

1. You are only as good as your assistant coaches:
Hire great people. You can teach someone X's and O's, it is much more difficult to teach good character.

3. Be where your feet are:
Make the big time where you are. It is easy to get caught in the "what if" games of college football. Opportunities will come knocking as you grow a program the right way.

2. Never hire someone you cannot fire:
It is easy to hire your friends in this profession, but that can put you in a difficult situation if you need to go your separate ways.
