@edzitron There is always only one reason to delay an ipo, the banks can’t line up enough buyers at the desired price.

Anthropic delaying IPO to November now. Kind of weird the window keeps slipping and no, I do not buy it’s for safety reasons

@edzitron @JoeJBenton "I left Anthropic's safety team two weeks ago. Now that someone else just went ultra-mega viral for doing the same thing, I figured this is a good moment to try to capitalize on that."

@edzitron @JoeJBenton My kid is racing to design a machine that can eat entire buildings. He is currently using legos but can we agree that if he succeeds that this is a big enough threat to warrant federal government intervention?

@JoeJBenton Hi can you explain in any detail what you’re actually talking about? Because it doesn’t sound anything to do with LLMs

These are the flimsy foundations of the AI bubble's hypernormalized reality. A lie told to will something into existence. And when it all collapses, we'll all ask how we ended up here.

This reality-distortion field requires constant fuel, in the form of circular make-believe deals for compute and GPUs that are either fictional or untenable, all flowing from the largest company on the stock market.

The depressing thing is how effective it is - how rational people can repeat platitudes that AI is "changing the world" and that there's "crazy demand for AI compute," despite little evidence outside of anecdotes and vague company data.

It's not just about being skeptical. The AI bubble is one of the most perfected forms of Adam Curtis' Hypernormalization. A hyper-effective reality-distortion field that makes rationality irrational, and cult-like slavishness a virtue.

The AI perception bubble is contingent on the notion that trillions of dollars can't be wrong, nor can those spending the trillions of dollars be wrong either. This idea crumbles at the slightest bit of pressure.

Understanding the motives behind the trillions in spending requires you to shift your perception of the bubble from the financials toward perception management. NVIDIA has invested billions to keep the facade alive.

We're told to trust insane valuations, even though they're wholly unjustifiable, on the basis that criticism is impolite and venture capitalists know what they're doing, something entirely unfounded.

The line dividing reality and kayfabe in tech is hype, not whether something actually exists or whether it has uses (or users). Growth has come from subsidies, peer pressure and executive psychosis.

The AI bubble is a perception bubble, and its hype sustains by an acceptance of bogus, inherently deceptive numbers, while avoiding asking difficult questions - and ignoring inconvenient truths.

The media, having been a co-conspirator to Enron's rise along with the metaverse and NFTs, has never acknowledged its culpability. The end result is a crisis of confidence, and the rise of alternative demagogues.

The AI bubble is yet another exercise in perception management, facilitated by a compliant media, except the mediation of reality - in LLMs' capabilities and economics - is wider than it's ever been.

What separates the AI bubble from previous exercises is the inability for its proponents to point to anything other than growth as reasons for its inevitability, or why it should become the status quo.

Despite burning billions of dollars, those most culpable for the metaverse flop escaped any consequence, nor did any journalist backing it see any fallout. The system protects its own, and the system must be protected.

The AI bubble, although uniquely bad, is part of an endless cycle of economic busts and absolution - but only for the powerful, creating a throughline that cuts through Enron and the dot com bubble.

The tech industry also demanded people disbelieve their eyes, expecting the public to accept their hype as fact, while also pushing multi-billion dollar flops like NFTs and The Metaverse. They're trying again with AI.

The goal is to trick you, the member of the public, into thinking that the system, however stacked against you, is inevitable. Anything that pierces that normalcy is to be fought at all costs.

The conflicting messages of "the system is always right" contrasted against declining living standards ultimately pushed people into confusion, anger, and into the outstretched arms of demagogues.
