This is misinformation. The functionality is NOT being dropped, merely moved / repackaged.
When this type of misinfo spreads, OTHER people start dogpiling me in a different way, labeling me a "coward" or "he deserved it", etc.

BlueSky Users Bully https://t.co/MeaXM15pnT Dev Into Dropping AI Coded Feature
Harass. Attack. Vilify. Bully. That is the tactic of the Leftist Activists of Open Source. Now they're using it to abuse and manipulate Al users. https://t.co/9g9onc0xWC

AI doesn't care. And it doesn't get tired. And this is the perfect task for it: it already has the design (D2D's docs and API), and it already has a known-good implementation of it and an app to test against and bang its head against.

Or rather, I should say that it "doesn't not work". It's still slow. Crashy. Buggy. Ugly. etc. But it's still light years ahead of where things were before.
So try it out if you'd like. And stop asking me for Linux support dammit 😂🍷

So that's what it did: it banged its head against d2d1.dll and paintdotnet.exe for about 3 weeks until it was able to boot up PDN. In WINE. For real.
Here's PDN on .NET 10 win-x64, in WINE 11.14-dev, on Ubuntu, in WSL2, on Windows 11. And yes it works on real Linux too. https://

Paint.NET-on-WINE has never been possible because of Direct2D, which WINE has really struggled with (for good reasons).
So like ... why not reimplement Direct2D-in-Paint.NET? Remove the dependency on WINE completely. Clean room reverse engineering ...

Thanks to @claudeai , it's now a reality. More story in the link above.
It's buggy and slow, but real progress is being made.
And I have no idea when/if this will be "production ready" or "supported" or even "good enough." Maybe next year, maybe next month, maybe 2035.

Claude made more progress on this in 3 weeks than we've seen in the 12 years since PDN started using Direct2D in 2014.
This isn't to talk down to the WINE folks, btw. Direct2D has a really complicated effects system, and probably only PDN really uses it, so the ROI was very low.

I just published a new alpha for Paint.NET 5.2, build 9739. It has some new fixes, updated translations ...
... and EXTREMELY EXPERIMENTAL support for WINE/Linux. That's not a typo. Yes, 🍷.

I just pushed a new alpha build for Paint.NET 5.2! This is the build that adds support for CICP metadata and HDR->SDR tone mapping when opening HDR images of a supported type (AVIF, HEIC, JPEG XL, JPEG XR, PNG)

And when you're making a post here or elsewhere about Paint.NET, just type Paint.NET. No need to use "paint .net" or "paintdotnet" or "/paint.net" or (my favorite) "Paint.NET" (with invisible zero-width space). No need to fear the auto-linkification of the text.

btw if you go to https://t.co/TQ7WFVpoJ4 and you get what looks like a search engine, it means your DNS still hasn't updated
If it looks like this then your DNS is up-to-date: https://t.co/iaMtGkr7Yb

And that's how it became a slam dunk case of trademark infringement and domain squatting. With the help of a lawyer, I GOT THE DOMAIN.

The previous owners would not sell. And/or they wanted lots and lots and lots of money.

Finally in December the latest (previous 😂) owner started hosting content that was all about Paint.NET, trying to deceive users into thinking it was the official website. Bad links, ads, etc. They were making money off of my registered trademark.

So now when you want to find Paint.NET just open up your browser and type in paint.net somewhere, hit enter, and there you go. No more confusion.
I've been trying to get this domain for 22 years. This is a big fucking deal.

I GOT THE DOMAIN! I FINALLY GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!1 🥳🎉
Paint.NET is now at https://t.co/ZJTUII4bVG!
Well, it will be just as soon as I push all the buttons to migrate content and set up redirects from getpaint.net etc. For now it's just a "hey go here" redirect page.
