New exclusive: In his 25 years as an OBGYN, Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas repeatedly sued patients for outstanding medical debt. At least 81 were arrested during their court proceedings. Some had debt from c-sections; others from miscarriages. https://t.co/AgPtkZr8mu

Earlier this year, @sangerkatz and I wrote about a chain of autism clinics that were limiting preschoolers' naps to 7 minutes so they could bill more to Medicaid.
Yesterday, Medicaid rolled out new guidance to states that would address this type of billing behavior. https://t.co

When Congress passed the No Surprises Act, legislators constantly described the new system as "baseball-style arbitration."
Turns out, they might have missed some key features Major League Baseball's system - and that might explain the outcomes we're seeing today. https://t.co/C

NSA expert folks fact-check me here, but wouldn't the No Surprises Act prevent a surprise bill for air ambulance transit in a case like this??

@sarahkliff If you want to do a story look into the insurance companies violating federal law by not paying IDR payments after they lose at arbitration. https://t.co/Zc2W4MKo82

@sarahkliff @msk Sarah- we know this is egregious . But is this really the main issue in why health care is so expensive? Do you guys maybe think the vast majority of the blame can be placed on insurance companies. The NYT loves going after doctors - I don’t hear too much about i

@sarahkliff Bummer, the payers shouldn’t have been so greedy and tried to stiff them. Maybe they’ll learn for next time

@sarahkliff Here’s a tip, commercial insurers refuse to give me a contract despite there being a 8 week wait to see a specialist in my speciality in my market. Then they pay me less than what a plumber charges me for complex work that takes about 40 mins of my time.

@sarahkliff In our reporting, we found numerous examples where surgical assistants out-earned surgeons by using the NSA's arbitration system. For this scoliosis surgery, the assistant won 24x the main surgeon's fee. https://t.co/UVNILE5p2R

@sarahkliff @msk Strange to write an article like this and not mention the incredibly low amounts that insurers pay medical professionals and how, in a pick one proposal or the other arbitration, arbitrators are left to pick the more reasonable of two preposterous proposals.

@sarahkliff Parenthetical to your main point, but important: "Surgical assistant" is a vague label. There are PA's, NP's, RN's, and CST surg techs - all of whom function as "surgical assistants" yet earn widely varying incomes.

For context, surgical assistants typically earn $70,000 to $100,000 per year.
We found that some have used No Surprises Act arbitration to earn $22,000 per hour.

.@msk & I dug into what surgical assistants are earning in No Surprises Act arbitration. We found surgical assistants' earning:
—$50,000 for a prostate surgery
—$100,000 for a breast reconstruction (just right breast, not left)
—$210,000 for a facial feminization procedure
