I think S3 is the only AWS service that has never disappointed me.
After heavily working with AWS for 8 years.
I've been burned by Lambda quotas, NAT Gateway bills, CloudWatch pricing, and whatever App Runner was supposed to be 🪦
S3? Never.

Your org doesn't need a landing zone on day one. It needs AWS Organizations, Identity Center and three accounts.
I keep seeing small teams start their AWS journey with a full Control Tower setup because a blog post told them it's best practice.

Multi-AZ can give you a real quick, massive cost problem if the routing between your services isn't set up properly.
Everything healthy and every dashboard green.
But your pods in one AZ talk to pods in another AZ for no reason at all.

I've seen setups where the NAT Gateway costs more than the compute behind it.
There's no technical reason this couldn't be a checkbox at VPC creation

The part that annoys me: Gateway Endpoints for S3 and DynamoDB are completely free. They've existed for years. They are not enabled by default.
So the cheap path exists, AWS just doesn't put you on it.
A lot of devs find out after the first painful invoice 💸

Lambda needs outbound internet => NAT Gateway (unless you're on IPv6)
Private subnet talks to S3 => through the NAT Gateway it goes

NAT Gateway is the most profitable design decision AWS ever made.
What it does: it forwards packets. That's it.
For that you pay $0.045 for every GB it processes, plus an hourly charge for each AZ you run one in, whether traffic flows or not.
