@emollick I actually love this approach. "We have solved all of the Millennium Challenges but we will not release the answers to respect the institutions and traditional process.".
That is such a bad look for those institutions!

@emollick Stuff like this is what makes me worry that the "underclass" is actually going to be the ones creating the "permanent underclass"

I don’t usually spread rumors but:
1) This is from someone with inside knowledge & is plausible
2) Is a real issue of policy we need to think about: if the norms of sharing become strained, will the labs start hoarding knowledge to avoid PR issues?

Got GPT-5.6 Astra building something neat, should be done shortly. If you know, you know (and if not, I'll be posting the whole thing soon anyway). https://t.co/EJMWF9Wt6w

It is funny that the Fermat's Last Theorem proof description, short as it is, still smells so much of Claude ("names each step and the Lean Theorem that carries it").

So far, there isn't evidence that production models with guardrails collude in this way, but both smarter closed models (which may be less compliant) & Mythos-class open models (that can be ablated) are coming.

One thing that makes Astra (and Fable) so interesting and, in some ways, so hard to grapple with is that they just take action.
I asked for an ill-defined deliverable in Blender and Astra spins up a historical research agent and a visual critic etc. & just starts doing stuff. ht

If you haven’t tried it, there is a fully narrated tour, historical links, you can read scrolls, you can flash forward to various scenes and theories about the libraries decay and its multiple fires, etc.

@emollick The reason it stays primitive is there’s no proper shared layer underneath. every person’s AI starts from its own context, so “multiplayer” just means multiple single-player sessions happening in the same building. The fix is a shared knowledge (not memory) layer the wh

I had early access, and a longer post is coming, but GPT-6 is stunning & is good enough that it actually does complex meaningful work for me autonomously for days.
As a more fun example, it made a historically-based simulation of the Library of Alexandria: https://t.co/o67r2SE4A

Codex voice (or is it ChatGPT Work in Codex voice?) is magical when it works well, but has a lot of weird loose edges that make it hard to use, like it seems to constantly switch threads it is working on, multitasks only sometimes, accesses the rest of Codex inconsistently, etc.

Prinz has been running legal benchmarks against AI systems and the latest models are very good... but cheaper/low reasoning models are not very good.
So, how do you make sure your vendor selling an AI solution is incentivized to serve the good (and therefore expensive) models?

@emollick First major socialist texts were in the 1840s, I think? That's decades into the Industrial Revolution! Seems too early for AI

Kind of surprised that we are not seeing more radical political ideas built around AI capabilities, the way that early mass industrialization was a prime motivator in the conceptions of capitalism, communism, and socialism.

@emollick eli5 is maybe too clickbaity of a name, the prompt doesn’t actually ask you to explain it like I’m 5, just like you don’t have domain knowledge
I think the “big pictures, few words” part of that prompt is actually the most important part

Research shows that drawing connections to what you already know helps you remember and build context.
And you aren’t five! You don’t need things dumbed down, you need things explained differently. The fact that LLMs can actually do this is one of their most exciting features

I don’t like ELI5 as default for “make this easy to understand,” a great thing about LLMs is the ability to work as universal translators across topics
Asking for generic dumbed-down explanations is worse than asking for personalized ones: “explain to me drawing on what I know”

🚨I have a new book coming out October 20: Co-Existence!
It is about how we live & work with AIs that are sometimes (but not always) smarter than we are. And it has a cool cover.
You can pre-order: https://t.co/Ti5jo6ksfI
