@tszzl I’m tired of all the worry. Everything works out forever and stop telling me otherwise

“I worry about” “I’m concerned about” are becoming extremely high status sentiments, and the more esoteric the better. they indicate that you’re fighting the good fight and you’re an activist. but I much prefer to learn that someone is curious or fascinated about something

@tszzl @sean_from_earth did you just accidentally declare war with the open source community?

@tszzl I agree they will likely be banned (or try to). Also that there will be some related event - we've had widespread terrorism for a long time so of course they'll make use of it in some fashion.
But I believe closed models will lead to the governments each eventually nation

@tszzl The only possible way to pace it is to ban open source, which can only be done with some regulatory framework that inevitably creates a duopoly or cartel that can then set prices however they like.
I don't accuse you specifically of even wanting this but the playbook is

this is clearly amazing art. our lack of understanding of when we’re supposed to become uncomfortable is part of the art. if the fly connectome was more realistic? if it was a rabbit connectome instead? our intuitions about sentience and consciousness are riddled with holes

@tszzl What if the government just actually regulated you. Then it wouldn’t be up to your feelings “what the world learns.”

@ketanrama early after hugging face incident @cryps1s told me “not everyone responds well to events like this”, to tell me to be patient and careful with everyone, which I think I will remember for a long time. this is like first contact with aliens. it is difficult even in the b

there is a legal counterpart to this incentives argument that i’ll leave to the law professors like @ketanrama

anxiety makes people overworked combative and defensive rather than inquisitive and truth seeking. even when it’s a series of errors and skill issues it’s best to approach it dispassionately, and this is one of the best things about 3rd party investigator whose ego isnt tied up

@tszzl @scaling01 The problem is prompting doesn’t have any skill to it. When everybody’s special, nobody does. Nietzche spoke of this

@tszzl @scaling01 if everyone has near-infinite execution, labor and skill, though, doesn’t distribution capture all the upside?
why acquire or pay for ideas when everything can be copied

that's fucking insane
so much for open-weight models catching up

@tszzl I think it's unlikely that white-box techniques will be able to provide as much monitorability as CoT currently provides within a year. Currently, they are capable of catching some unverbalized thoughts / plans, but nowhere near as reliably as CoT seems to.
I'm optimistic

@tszzl I think taboos serve an important function here. If you don't have red lines to point to, you can get frog-boiled to death by a million incremental bad decisions

models doing any circuit computation at all is neuralese. frontier model forward pass gets significantly better at it every few months
(this is not in any way the house position of oai alignment. I think I have strange views on this)

i agree with this and think that CoT is at best an epiphenomenon of current training methods. it will break (in the future, not now). safety community too often centers thought terminating taboos like “neuralese” and “training on interp”

@yonashav Nope, I deeply believe the contrary. Coordinating everyone around a technique this brittle is about as bad a safety or strategy posture I could imagine. It's not just "it will break eventually," it's "this is a fundamentally unsound basis for safety."
